• The Chupacabra

  Inspired by cave art and motherhood!
  Margaret Timbrell considers herself a conceptual needlework artist – and she is quite accomplished in that arena. So, why is she scrawling, scratching and drawing expansive narratives across the walls of Ramon’s?

  Introducing The Chupacabra, a body of work produced during Timbrell’s residency within the gallery. Using this opportunity to explore outside of her regular medium, this artist is diving headfirst into the collected musings and ideas gathered over the years in the pages of sketch books.

  While representing her present-day observations, through the adventures of the Chupacabra and her pups, Margaret studies the personal nature of human mark-making, its outside influences, and the unchanged relationship to creativity that we share with our prehistoric ancestors.

  About the Artist:

  Margaret Timbrell is a text based needlework artist with a multidisciplinary degree from NYU. Her work is inspired by various influences that alter language and interpersonal engagement. Timbrell has exhibited around the US and has been featured in the SF Examiner, LA Times, Bust Magazine. Currently Timbrell is a studio artist and board member at Root Division.

• Postal Collage Project No.8

  Join us for the San Francisco debut of the Round Table [Collaboration] Postal-Collage Project No. 8. Ramon’s Tailor is proud to again be exhibiting this annual international art project.

  The Postal Collage Project is part art project, part social experiment. We’re proud to host it for the eighth year. For this year’s project, collaborators from multiple countries produced over one hundred collages during the course of six months. Assembled in working groups of five members each, with each group arranged in a ‘circular’ sequence, participants send and receive works-in-progress by mail. Each participant is the principal author of one collage, and a contributing author of four others. Each collaborator eventually finishes the collage they started. This unique project is organized and implemented by Berkeley-based artist Marty McCutcheon.

  Ramon’s Tailor is a space for showing alternative projects, like this one, that celebrate collaboration and engage diverse groups of people from all over the world. We’re excited to share this project with you.

• Drifting Ruins

  Jess Lanham’s solo show, Drifting Ruins, is an installation of works uncovering abstract landscapes of human relics and detritus.

  When viewed from multiple angles and illuminated by obscured light, a physical depth is exposed between glowing layers of suspended silk. The silk’s drifting sway mimics change and movement in time. The glow emulates a lifeform still present, urging viewers to explore the layers and discover what is left.

  Are we looking through a portal to the past, future, or another place entirely?

  About the Artist:

  Jess Lanham is an artist and designer based in San Francisco. Hailing from northern New Mexico, she attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited in New Mexico, Chicago, and San Francisco.

  Jess is interested in how materials and artifacts collect and accumulate debris, and the new forms they assume over time. She explores the idea of objects either growing by themselves or being manipulated into something new and obscure. As these objects disintegrate and evolve, their moment in time becomes ambiguous, and their interaction with the landscape and atmosphere can blur the subtle distinctions between the old world and a potential new world.

  Peeking over the wooden gallery walls and in every hidden corner of Ramon’s Tailor, you will find an archive various postcards, trinkets, and art objects. You may find yourself asking while looking at the art, “Is this part of the show?” For Taxonomy Anostalgia, this archive, collected over 7 years at Ramon’s Tailor, is the show!

  Artist Alice Combs attempts to study the accumulated collection of artifacts as if it was a collection of biological specimens – grouping and rearranging them in the space based mostly on surface observations and partially based on the oral history of Frank Merritt, who runs the space. Come see the surprising findings and catch a glimpse of her uniquely analog analysis methods.

  In Souvenir, dozens of artist-produced items are presented in a simulated pop-up storefront. This group show, presented by the Nutty Club, includes postcards, pins, ceramic ware, coloring books, coasters, booklets, and other small works, all offered for sale. The cumulative experience of the show immediately references nearby tourist driven shops and their various California themes, while effectively coalescing in concepts of consumerism; grittiness and polish; contemporary culture, nostalgia, and kitsch.

• W.C. 17: Meet Me In The Bathroom

  Public/Private/Political Spaces in the Era of #MeToo.

  The latest installation in the W.C. is truly site and moment specific. Meet Me In The Bathroom seeks to subvert the dominant paradigm of the public restroom as disquieting spaces often defined by patriarchal purview. Using collected cultural ephemera, Annie Miller presents the question of what these spaces might feel like through the lens of female privilege, borrowing from the visual vernacular of a grungy men’s room.

   

  About the Artist
  Annie Miller is not a real artist. Before the era of gender-neutral bathroom designations, she relished any opportunity to stride unflinchingly into the men’s room instead of waiting in line to use the women’s room.

• W.C. 16: Swimming in Selfies

  Whimsical and surreal, this installation uses a non-conventional medium to feed commentary about pushing life and art into the modern day – specifically the extent to which social media now inhabits our private and intimate moments.
  Swimming in Selfies uses a high-tech, industrial grade vinyl that coats everything from ceiling to floor. As one enters the tiny W.C. space, three additional figures visually coax the viewer to engage. A woman in lingerie and a man seated on the toilet each seem nonplussed by your presence, while a giant pink octopus, not initially identifiable, dangerously surrounds the space. Experience this collaborative piece by Gary James Lee and Spencer Pearson, and join the conversation.

• Christmas at Gump’s

  Christmas at Gump’s This installation of photo-collages has as it’s source pictures taken at Gump’s Department Store in San Francisco in November 2017.

  On a trip to California, artist Leala Hewak happened upon this venerable emporium of jewels, crystal, perfumes and other treasures, and was immediately seduced. She began ravenously photographing the store and its merchandise, in particular the small forest of Christmas trees laden with delicate, costly and sometimes bizarre Bohemian glass ornaments. She returned to the store several times and remained for hours— much to the consternation and amusements of staff and patrons.

  Using the resulting images, the artist experiments with montages starring the captured objects in darkly comical productions. The resulting works, presented in heavy gilt frames, strive for the rich dignity of Dutch old master’s still-life paintings. The works in Christmas at Gump’s explore the psychological world of the luxury economy and the artist’s own relationship to consumerism. Like the Dutch Republic during it’s golden age, San Francisco is tremendously prosperous. An old city by North American standards, a combination of “old” and “new” money permits Gump’s to survive and thrive.

   

  About the Artist
  Leala Hewak is a photographer and digital artist, based in Toronto and Los Angeles. Her work has been shown in Toronto and Winnipeg, and is held in several private collections. Christmas at Gump’s is her first solo show in the US.

• Alhambra SRO

  Alhambra SRO is a multidisciplinary art project by Paz de la Calzada in collaboration with chef Tomas Marconi. The project consists of a site-specific installation and a gastronomical experience drawn from a local immigrant community of the Tenderloin in San Francisco. This project not only playfully engages with the architectural features of Ramon’s Tailor but also comments upon the cultural and social dynamics of this neighborhood. 

  This Site-Specific installation consists of a geometric pattern found in The Alhambra Palace in Spain, made of hand-cut pieces of recycled carpet from a hotel in the Tenderloin. The pattern will be repeated through the gallery, including floors emphasizing the decorative style of arabic tiles.

  Parallel to the artwork, in collaboration with the local muslim community, the artists will create a pastry with influences from Yemeni cuisine and from the  arabic-andalusi desserts of Jerez de la Frontera. The food serves as a bridge from xenophobic stereotypes to conviviality.
